Mark 1:1, "The
beginning of the gospel of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God;" So, now that we know whose gospel it is, it is also important to notice that there is only ONE. There are many false gospels going around today, but there is only one true gospel. I, perhaps, have been guilty of referring to the first 4 books of the New Testament as the gospels or Matthew's gospel, Mark’s gospel, etc. However, these are all ACCOUNTS of the ONE true gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, to understand what the gospel is, one must be aware of the circumstances surrounding the gospel. So what is the purpose of the gospel? Paul tells Timothy and the Corinthians plainly in I Corinthians 15:1-5 and II Timothy 1:8-10 that the gospel brings understanding and enlightenment to the child of God about what his Lord has done for him. This salvation keeps the regenerate child from walking in darkness and ignorance. Also, Paul says that the way we learn about our redemption is hearing the story of the death, burial, and resurrection according to the Scriptures. They are our only rule of faith and practice, and they tell the story with all the necessary details. Each gospel account together gives us all the information that we need about our Lord while He walked this earth. Even though John said more could be written about Him so much that the world could not contain the books, what has been written is exactly what God inspired to be put on record for us. Therefore, let us press forward in the study of His word so that we may glean the sweet truths that come from His bountiful storehouse. |
