Deuteronomy 32:7,
"Remember the days of old,
consider the years of many
generations: ask thy
father, and he will shew thee;
thy elders, and they
will tell thee."
This morning, our country is
reeling from many
social problems. One of the
biggest is lack of
respect by the younger folks to
their elders. The
main reason that this problem
exists is that parents
are too lazy, scared, or
unprincipled to discipline
their children as they should
and teach them respect
for people that are older or in
positions of authority
over them. One thing my dad
always used to say about
this matter was, "When someone
is older than you or in
a position higher than you, you
have to respect their
years of experience and/or
office whether you respect
them as a person or not." For
example, it is our
responsibility to respect the
president and others
that are over us whether we like
the man or not. We
need to respect the elders of
the church whether we
personally get along or not.
Personality clashes are
no excuse for a lack of respect
in the house of God.
Here, Moses gives an exhortation
to ask the older
generation of some things. Ask
the fathers, elders,
etc. about things already done.
Ask them of OLD
things. What things are these?
The following verses
give that answer, but the word
itself also gives an
answer to the things inquired
after. The word "old"
in this verse refers to things
of an eternal nature.
It is something that has been
done and things that
will yet be done. Therefore, we
are to ask and
inquire of things about God (for
He is the only
eternal being). God has done
things in the past "of
old." He is working things now
and will work things
in the future. He is without
beginning and without
end. He is the Creator of all
things in the universe.
He is the Creator of all things
spiritual in man and
the kingdom. He does all of
these things. He is the
One that we are
to inquire after.
We should not be
seeking after the things of man,
or looking to find
the answer to some cosmic
question, "Well just what
does it mean to be me?" Too many
people today are
geared into thinking, worrying,
and inquiring after
their own selves. We should be
inquiring after the
LORD. What does that entail? It
means that we should
seek to know all that we can
about Him. We should be
deeply devoted to studying His
Word. We should look
to our "elders" to teach us
things that the LORD has
revealed to them over the course
of many years of
study. One of the things I look
forward to when going to
a large meeting is sitting in
the presence of older
ministers to
learn from them things about my LORD.
I
do like to hear an "occasional"
story, but I am more
concerned with knowing more
about my LORD. I want to
hear one more time about how He
saved me as He saved
Jacob from the waste howling
wilderness. I want to
hear just one more time about He
brought me up out of
an horrible pit and set my feet
upon Christ and
established my goings. I want
hear the blessed story
of how by grace we are saved
through faith and that
not of ourselves: it is a gift
of God. These are the
things of old to inquire after,
for they are the only
things that truly matter in the
grand scheme of things.
"More about Jesus would I know.
More of His grace to
others show.
More, more about Jesus."
In Hope,
Bro Philip
