Deuteronomy 32:2,
"My doctrine shall drop as the
rain, my speech shall distil as
the dew, as the small
rain upon the tender herb, and
as the showers upon the
grass:"
This morning, there are many
that are not familiar
with the way that the Lord
blesses His people. They
have formulas by which they
think that God should
operate, but He plainly lays out
the manner in which
He blesses His people in this
verse. He works His
will in blessings in different
magnitudes but all in
the same way (His power). Moses
here is recounting
the Lord's blessings in a song
(whole book of
Deuteronomy), but this
particular chapter is the
climax or highpoint of the
entire song.
In each of the phrases (clauses)
in this verse,
there are different types of
blessings. However, each
of them has the SAME substance.
The showers, rain,
small rain, and dew are all
composed of water (hence
the same source). He blesses His
people exceeding
abundantly above all that we can
ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20) He
blesses us with rain. It is
always amazing to me to
see how much more brilliantly
grass and flowers shoot
forth when rain hits them as
opposed to our watering.
When we lived in California,
there was a serious
drought in the late 80s. People
watered their lawns,
but they still seemed to dry up
and die. However, I
will never forget how their
lawns shot forth into
greenery whenever the rain
finally came. The Lord's
ways are much higher than our
ways. His rain ALWAYS
does a much better job than our
feeble efforts at
watering do.
He blesses us
with dew. His speech
distils as the dew. We are told
that our Lord's
speech while He walked this
earth made people amazed
at His gracious words and
speech. Some soldiers were
even sent to capture Him in John
7, but they returned
without Him and could only
reply, "Never man spake
like this man." He blesses with
small rain upon the
tender plants. This means that
He blesses the babes
as well as the aged. He cares
for the small and
tender ones just as much as the
ones that have been
faithful for many years. Even if
the ones that have
borne the heat of the day get
riled that He treats the
one-hour labourers the same, He
replies, "Is thine eye
evil because mine is good?"
(Matthew 20) He cares for the little
ones as well.
He blesses us
with showers.
There are times that His
blessings may seem more
abundant than others. Some
meetings feel more
Spirit-filled than others. He
gives us seasons of
revival that make abundant
growth come forth. In each
of these, He blesses us with the
SAME SUBSTANCE. Now,
in His service, it is not our
job to demand showers.
He may give us small rain or dew
from time to time.
Other times, it may just be
rain. However, when we
come to His house, we should be
thankful with whatever
manner of blessing He sees fit
to grant us, for we are
not worthy of ANY of them.
Finally, we (as ministers
of the gospel) are required to
be found faithful. We
are told to preach His
unsearchable riches. Many
times, the blessings of rain,
small rain, dew, and
showers come in His house in the
form of preaching.
So, it is our duty to be
faithful students of His word
and rightly divide the word of
truth. But, it is also
our duty to bring it in such a
manner that is
edifying. A man may come with
the truth, but if his
spirit is in the wrong place, it
will not be
profitable.
What is the only
difference between rain
and sleet? What is the only
difference between dew
and frost? The weather is
beginning to turn cold
outside, and the drive to work
in the mornings looks
vastly different. What once
(weeks ago) was dew on
the grass in the morning is now
frost on the grass.
When the dew was there weeks
ago, the grass was green
and brilliant. Now, the frost is
there, and the grass
is brown and dead. The substance
is the same, but the
temperature is different. There
is not much in this
world more riling to me than a
minister that comes
before the Lord's people (who is
blessed to know the
truth) and bring it in such a
way that is frosty. He
beats up the bride of Christ,
seems to care not for
them, and whips them until they
bleed (figuratively speaking). This makes the
sermon (no matter how true)
nothing but deadness. May
we ever strive to know the truth
of the word and
present it in such a way that
brings seed to the sower
and bread to the eater that we
may grow up together in
the knowledge of
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
In Hope,
Bro Philip
