I Peter 1:24-25, "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."

This morning, there are many running around worried about people having low self-esteem. I am concerned about man having high self-esteem. It is in man's nature to esteem himself more highly than he ought.  It is man's desire to think that he is right, and everyone else is wrong. It is the foolishness of man's heart that makes him think that he is invincible or will live forever. Low self-esteem? Hardly.

Man's proper perspective is to think of himself as grass and the flower of the grass. What are some of the characteristics of grass and its flowers? One of the foremost characteristics is that it lasts but a short time. When one considers the course of their life in relation to the course of time, it is but a drop of a bucket. Then, when one considers that in relation to eternity, it is not even a drop. Man's life is but for a moment. Another characteristic is that the glory is a short period in the short life.

Grass and flowers do have a period of glory, but the period of glory is far shorter than the rest of the life. Man's glory lasts for about 20-25 years in a 70-80 year life. That means that a mere 25-35% of man's life is glorious from a natural perspective.  Currently, I am only 25, but I can already feel some effects of aging, which will only increase with the coming years. This glory of man is fleeting. Surely the people is but grass. That is our proper place.  So, where is the happy ending? Many people watch movies or TV and wonder sometimes, "Where's the happy ending that I wanted to see?" Sometimes, there is not one, but I am thankful this morning that this is not one of those times. The happy ending is that the word of the Lord endureth forever.

The context of these verses show what word that is. It is the Living Word that has quickened us together with Him. It is none other than Jesus Christ. He is the Word that endureth forever, and because He lives, we shall live also.  There is the happy ending that we are looking forward to. The great thing about this "ending" (from the natural point of view) is that it is just the beginning of an endless life (from a manifest spiritual point of view). Our ending naturally is just the beginning of an endless eternity of bliss and charity beholding the face of God in righteousness.  Peter also said that this enduring Word is preached.  When we preach, let us not be negligent to always have our messages Christ centered. He should be the focal point of every sermon, and it is our due responsibility to comfort the Lord's people by telling them of their home to which they are going. May we ever keep ourselves humble in our walk ever looking to that glorious home prepared for us.

In Hope,

Bro Philip
