The word "law" is one that is quite common throughout the Bible. A simple definition of "law" would be "instruction" or "principle." It is of great importance that you know there is more than one "law" spoken of in scripture.

     First of all we need to be reminded we can still profit from the reading of the Old Testament. The first five books in the Old Testament make up the "law" of Moses. This is sometimes referred to as the ceremonial law or law of sacrifices. When we read the writings of Moses through the illumination of the Holy Spirit we will see Christ pictured in the language, not only in the law of Moses, but also in the prophets, in the remainder of the Old Testament. The Old Testament looks forward to the coming of Christ and in many way depicts the things He would say and do thousands of years beforehand. The New Testament looks back to the actual time when Christ walked upon the earth in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. So keep in mind that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable."

     The word "law" and its applications are various. I do not intend to explain them all, nor in detail, but hopefully to give you enough of an idea of what to look for.

  *  There was a law given in the garden of Eden which governed Adam and Eve. This law was the first to be broken.

  *  The Bible describes the law of sin and death. This law is tied directly to the transgression of the first law ever broken.

  *   There is the ceremonial law of Moses, the law of sacrifices contained in the first five books of the Old Testament.

  *   There is the moral law, or ten commandments, which law is taught by Jesus and summarized as the royal law of love.

  *   There are civil and judicial laws.

  *   The Bible speaks of laws of nature.

  *   There is the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.

     These are just a few of the topics that are referred to as law in God's word. This is another area where you will need to rightly divide the word. If not, well, you know what could happen.
